LEBANON (PRIORITY COUNTRY)

Completed project (2007-2009): “Good Governance for Enhanced Post-War Reconstruction”. The project was implemented by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and aimed at enhancing the administrative capacity of local government to manage immediate reconstruction plans and long-term sustainable development in Southern Lebanon. With CyprusAid contribution, 20 small scale projects were also implemented. CyprusAid contribution to the project amounted to €522,000.

Completed project (2009): “Contribution for the recovery and reconstruction of the Nahr el-Bared Palestinian refugee camp” in cooperation with the “United Nations Relief and Works Agency” (UNRWA). At the International Donors Conference for Lebanon held at Vienna on June 23 2008, Cyprus pledged the amount of €100,000 for the reconstruction of the conflict affected territory of the Nahr el-Bared Palestinian refugee camp.


Completed Project (2009): “Improving teaching and learning practices in Lebanon through introducing active learning and gender sensitive approaches”, in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The project aim was to improve teaching and learning practices in schools across Lebanon through enhancing the teaching capacity of teacher trainers on the principles of active learning and gender equality. CyprusAid contribution to the project amounted to €14,663.


Completed Project (2009): “Humanitarian Mine Action in Lebanon”, in partnership with the “Republic of Slovenia, International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance”. The contribution of CyprusAid (€100,000) was used for the deployment of two manual Battle Area Clearance teams into the cluster bomb contaminated areas of South Lebanon for a period of 1,5 months. The teams cleared a total of 52,850 square meters of suspected dangerous area, recovering 15 Sub Munitions within three ongoing tasks.

Completed Project (2010): “Humanitarian Mine Action in Lebanon”, in partnership with the “Republic of Slovenia, International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance”. CyprusAid contribution (€200,000) was used for the deployment of one manual Battle Area Clearance team into contaminated areas of South Lebanon for a period of 7 months. The team released a total of 96,800 square meters during the period, recovering 330 sub munitions and one UXO. In addition 8,750 square meters were cleared for the team to be able to reach the required clearance depth (surface clearance).
